Any adventure begins with the right fuel, and no one understands this better than Waiheke Island locals. Here on the island we’re crazy about good coffee and hearty, fresh breakfasts made with all the good stuff. Start your day off right at one of these popular breakfast/brunch spots.
8 Miami Ave, Surfdale.
Enjoy this little slice of the Riviera in the heart of Surfdale, Waiheke. Frenchôt opens as a cafe during the day for superb French baking, and operates as a licensed bistrot in the evenings. Start your day the French way with buttery pastries (the croissants are heavenly), baguette sandwiches, or sweet crêpes and savoury galettes. Sit in the kitchen area and watch the chefs at work or enjoy your Kokako coffee or fresh-squeezed orange juice on the sunny deck/
If you come for dinner instead, you should do as the French do and begin with a pastis to freshen your palette, and follow with a house-made terrine served with baguette. You can’t miss the steak frites, and leave plenty of room for dessert!
Franco’s La Panetteria
30 Belgium Street, Ostend
Franco’s is an unassuming Italian-inspired bakery specialising in high quality baked goods, sandwiches, pizza, and other savoury and sweet delights. Get in early to snap up one of their famous loaves of bread and take it to the beach with some local cheese and cured meats for a DIY breakfast worthy of kings. You should absolutely grab one of the dark chocolate or citrus tarts for a morning sweet treat.
1/149 Ocean View Road, Oneroa
Wai Kitchen offers a relaxed dining environment with a stunning ocean view. Brunch is where this cosy cafe excels, with a menu of hearty basics (eggs benedict, cashew-nut granola, house-smoked salmon on ciabatta, etc) to fuel you for a day of adventuring. For those who need that morning jolt, they offer Three Beans organic fair trade coffee, or you could try their fresh orange juice or indulge in a glass of bubbly from their wine menu.
Solar Eating House
139 Ocean View Road, Oneroa
A cosy, funky building and lush garden bar offer the perfect location to enjoy your morning coffee. An all-day, entirely free-range breakfast grill includes all the Kiwi classics and some surprises (eggs with hummus, anyone? It’s delicious). Coffee and fresh juices will fuel you for the day ahead. You may find you enjoy Solar Eating House so much you return for dinner, where you can get wood-fired pizza cooked in the stunning garden oven right in front of you.
