Waiheke Island is a foodie paradise. Dining on the island is a complete experience, from the fresh local ingredients, innovative recipes, and award-winning wines to the breathtaking views from the window and verandah of most restaurants. Indulge your partner with a meal they’ll never forget at one of Waiheke’s most romantic destinations.
These restaurants offer intimate dining, sophisticated flavours, and that little something special that will set your heart aflutter.
126 Church Bay Road, Oneroa
As part of one of the most iconic vineyards on Waiheke Island, the Mudbrick Restaurant is a destination in and of itself. Situated on top of the Mudbrick ridge, this intimate restaurant offers sweeping views of the Hauraki Gulf and the glittering lights of Auckland city. Enjoy cocktails in the crisp summer air from the extensive balcony before being escorted inside to your candlelit table for a meal that’s practically a spiritual awakening. Choose from an a la carte or degustation menu and allow your waiter to pair your choices from an extensive wine list. Mudbrick is the perfect location to celebrate an anniversary or special occasion, with spectacular surrounds that will transport you away from the daily grind.
76 Onetangi Road, Onetangi
If you like your vineyard experience to be a bit more rustic and unassuming, then you want to visit Te Moku vineyard restaurant, The Shed. Nestled in the vines that produce their award-winning wine, the restaurant resembles a farm shed. Despite the breezy surrounds, the menu is sophisticated and exciting. This is absolutely a foodie destination, with every dish bursting with freshness and flavour. Much of the produce comes from the on-site gardens – with salmon and other meats smoked in-house as well – and the chefs love to experiment with combining unexpected flavours. If you’re nervous about a date then the Shed’s beautiful location, exciting food and flowing wine will give you plenty to talk about.
Nestled in a rolling valley resplendent with olive groves and vines is one of the most romantic spots on the island. This location was once the home of the infamous Highlife New Years Eve festival, but now boasts one of the finest cafes on the island offering elegant lunches and wine tastings. Enjoy a menu that combines the best fresh local produce with inspiration from the mediterranean, and share a bottle of Bordeaux from the adjoining Stonyridge Vineyard, described in The Guardian UK as “One of the finest wineries in the world.” We also recommend taking home a bottle of the olive oil.
Cable Bay Vineyard, 12 Nick Johnston Drive, Oneroa
Cable Bay is one of the go-to wineries on Waiheke. As well as an upmarket indoor restaurant called The Dining Room, they’ve recently launched The Verandah – a sophisticated and modern outdoor eatery with a stunning view over the Hauraki Gulf.
A wood-fired oven takes pride of place, allowing the kitchen staff to whip up sharing plates that have all the flavour and presentation of The Dining Room, without the flashy price tag. Enjoy fresh salads and seafood, house-cured meat, local cheeses, and ice-cream and macarons made on the premises. Of course, there’s an ample wine list to match. This is the perfect location to wile away an afternoon and watch the sun set over the water.
205 Awaawaroa Road
This Italian eatery is off the beaten track, but completely worth the visit. After a long trek down a narrow dirt road you’ll find yourself transported to the Tuscan countryside with views of the ocean and surrounding vineyards. Try the rustic a la carte menu or get adventurous and indulge in the degustation or the popular Sunday Long Lunch – a unique dining experience spread over four-and-a-half hours!
Come with an empty stomach because you will be delighted and indulged. Accompany your meal with a selection of fine wines – including the Poderi Pinot Grigio – and you absolutely must have a digestif (or two) of the house-made limoncello.
